This peer reviewed article, the full title of which is “‘There is Something in the Breathing Together of the Pastors and the Faithful Which is Not in the Pastors Alone’: The Normative Significance of the Sensus Fidei,” reflects on the theological and ecclesiological significance of the sensus fidei, a gift from Christ to the Church, sustained by the Holy Spirit. It acknowledges the roots of this teaching in Scripture and tradition, and offers some broad but concrete insights that may be useful in ensuring that the pastors and the faithful, comprising the whole People of God, can “breathe together,” and learn from one another, especially in responding to pressing contemporary theological and pastoral concerns.
